Plum Fruit Spread

Frusano does not offer plum fruit spreads. Why?

Plums naturally contain a high content of sorbitol. Sorbitol is the sugar alcohol of fructose, and very closely related to fructose. Sorbitol has a laxative effect on everyone, whether fructose intolerant or not. Therefore, products to which sorbitol is artificially added must also carry a warning that they "may have a laxative effect".

There is evidence that sorbitol can aggravate fructose malabsorption. In hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI), sorbitol must be avoided completely because the body metabolizes sorbitol to fructose.

Sorbitol is present in large quantities in most stone fruits, including apricot, plum, cherry and peach. Why plums in particular keep ending up on lists of tolerable fruits for people with fructose intolerance is a mystery to us.

Below is a list of Frusano fruit spreads that are generally well tolerated. All Frusano products are without sorbitol.
